Understand How Gravestones Decay and Lose Items
Decay Mechanics
Gravestones don't last forever. The mod features a configurable decay system where gravestones gradually break down over time or after subsequent deaths. Visual cracks appear on the
gravestone block as it decays through stages.
Decay Stages and Timelines
Gravestones progress through multiple decay stages (typically 3 before breaking completely). Each stage is visible as increasing cracks on the block texture. The time between stages depends on server configuration—it could be hours or days. Some servers also trigger decay when you die again, accelerating the process.
What Happens When a Gravestone Breaks
Once the final decay stage is reached, the gravestone breaks and drops all stored items on the ground. These items then follow Minecraft's standard despawn timer, usually 5 minutes. After that, they're permanently lost.
Protecting Your Items
Retrieve items before decay completes. Check your gravestones regularly, especially if you die frequently. Ask your admin about decay settings—some servers disable time-based decay entirely, relying only on death-triggered decay. Understanding your server's configuration helps you plan retrieval timing.
