Using PingHUD to Diagnose Lag on a Multiplayer Server

Compare Players Against Each Other

Open the player list and look at the numerical ping for everyone connected. If one player shows a much higher number than the rest, the problem is likely on that player's end rather than the server. If every player's number is elevated at the same time, the server or the route to it is the more likely cause.

Track Changes Over Time

Watch the numbers across several minutes rather than a single glance. Stable but high values suggest a consistently slow route. Values that swing wildly suggest packet loss or an unstable link. Note whether spikes line up with specific events, like a player joining, a large build loading, or a world save.

Act on What You See

When you identify a player with an outlier ping, ask them to check their own connection before assuming the server is at fault. When all players rise together, check server load and hosting conditions. Because PingHUD gives exact figures, you can describe the problem precisely to other admins or to your host instead of saying the server 'feels laggy'.
