Get Your First Obsidian Ingots

Mining and Smelting Obsidian

Obsidian ingots are the foundation of this mod's gear. You'll need a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian blocks—stone tools and below won't work.

Travel to the Nether or search the Overworld for obsidian near lava pools. Mine blocks until you have enough for your first set of tools or armor.

Converting to Ingots

Once you have obsidian blocks, head to a blast furnace. Each block converts into an obsidian ingot—the crafting material for all obsidian tools and armor.

Blast furnaces work faster than regular furnaces, so this is your best option for bulk smelting. If you don't have a blast furnace yet, craft one using iron blocks and a furnace.

With ingots in hand, open your crafting table. Obsidian tools and armor follow standard Minecraft recipes—use the same patterns you'd use for iron or diamond gear, just swap in obsidian ingots instead. You're now ready to craft your first obsidian pickaxe, sword, or armor piece.
