How to Make Custom Tooltip Styles with a Resource Pack
The Obscure Tooltips mod reads its styling from resource packs, so you can define your own tooltip looks without touching the mod's code. This is the main way to make rare items feel special.
Setting Up the Pack Structure
Create a resource pack folder and add a pack.mcmeta file so Minecraft recognizes it. Inside assets, create a namespace folder matching your pack (for example assets/mypack/). The mod looks for tooltip style definitions in a dedicated folder inside that namespace — check the mod's example pack or documentation for the exact folder and file naming it expects, since these define which style IDs exist.
Defining a Style
Each style file describes the visual properties of a tooltip: background color, border color and thickness, text colors, and optional 3D model display. Copy an existing style and change the color values to create a new rarity tier. Give each style a unique ID so you can reference it later.
Applying a Style to an Item
To make an item use your style, you assign the style ID to that item through the mod's item tag or component system. The exact assignment method depends on your mod version — consult the mod's documentation for whether it uses item tags, data components, or a config mapping. Once assigned, the item's tooltip renders with your custom background and border. Reload with F3+T to test changes without restarting.
