How to Make Mochi from Rice

Gather Your Materials

To pound mochi, you'll need cooked rice and two special tools: a Mortar (Usu) and a Mallet (Kine). Craft these wooden tools first using the crafting table. You'll also need a heat source nearby.

Pound Your Mochi

1. Place the Mortar block on the ground where you want to work

2. Cook rice using your Farmer's Delight setup (or equivalent cooking method)

3. Place the hot cooked rice into the Mortar block

4. Equip the Kine mallet and right-click on the Mortar repeatedly

5. Continue pounding until the rice transforms into soft mochi paste

Tips

The rice must be hot when you place it in the Mortar—cold rice won't work properly. You can watch the mochi's appearance change as you pound it; keep going until it reaches the desired consistency. The pounding is interactive, so you'll see visual feedback with each strike. Once finished, you can use your mochi paste in traditional holiday recipes like Osechi boxes or other festive dishes.
