How to Grow Moss Under Glass and Other Transparent Blocks

Why Moss Stops Spreading

In vanilla, a moss block refuses to spread or accept bonemeal when a solid block sits directly above it. Transparent blocks like glass, chests, and similar non-opaque blocks are treated as obstructions by the default growth check, so your moss stays stuck even though you can see through the block. Moss Fix removes that restriction, letting moss grow and spread in tight, covered spaces.

Setting Up a Covered Moss Patch

1. Place your moss block on a solid floor, then place the transparent block (glass pane, glass block, chest, etc.) directly above it, leaving a one-block gap if you want the moss to spread sideways.

2. Use bonemeal on the moss block. With the mod installed, the growth check no longer fails just because something is above it.

3. Watch for the moss to spread to nearby valid blocks (dirt, stone, and other blocks moss normally covers) and for vegetation to appear.

4. Repeat bonemeal applications to expand the patch outward from the original block.

Practical Uses

This is ideal for indoor moss gardens, moss under glass display floors, and moss growing beneath chests in storage rooms. You can now decorate with moss in enclosed builds without tearing out the ceiling first.
