Craft Your First Stair Frame

Gather Your Materials

Before you can create stair variants, you need to make a stair frame. Collect 8 sticks and any vanilla stair block. Vanilla stairs include oak stairs, stone stairs, brick stairs, and many others.

Craft the Stair Frame

Open your crafting grid (3×3). Place the 8 sticks around the edges, leaving the center empty. Put your vanilla stair block in the center square. This creates a stair frame item.

What's Next

Once you have a stair frame, you're ready to convert almost any block into stairs. The frame is reusable in the sense that you'll craft new frames as needed for different stair variants. Keep some frames in your inventory when you're building, as they're relatively cheap to make once you have sticks and a few vanilla stairs on hand.
