How to Diagnose Mods That Silently Fail to Apply Their Mixins

Spot the Symptom

Sometimes nothing crashes, but a mod's feature simply does not appear. If that mod relies on MixinBooter to patch classes at runtime, a failed mixin application can be silent. Your first move is to open the log and search for the mod's mixin config name. Warnings about a target class not being found, or about a mixin being skipped, are the tell.

Common Reasons a Mixin Is Skipped

  • The target class was changed or removed by another mod.
  • The mixin was written for a different game version than the one you run.
  • Another mod already patched the same method, causing a conflict.
  • The mixin config was not registered because its parent mod loaded too late.

Steps to Isolate the Problem

1. Note the target class named in the warning.

2. Search your mod list for any mod that also touches that class.

3. Temporarily disable the suspected competitor and relaunch.

4. If the feature appears, you have found the conflict; check both mods for config toggles that disable their overlapping patch.

5. If it still fails, the dependent mod may simply be incompatible with your game version.

What Not to Do

Do not hand-edit mixin config files inside jars. MixinBooter is only the delivery mechanism; the mixin definitions belong to the mods using it, and editing them usually breaks signatures and causes harder crashes.
