Set Up Letterbox Bars and Lens Distortion for Cinematic Screenshots

Valtique Shaders includes two camera-style effects. They make recordings and screenshots look like scenes from an old film: black letterbox bars along the top and bottom of the display, and subtle lens distortion that imitates the curve of real camera glass.

Turn the Effects On

1. With Valtique Shaders active, open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.

2. Select Valtique Shaders and open its settings screen with the pack's settings or options button.

3. Look through the options for the letterbox bars and switch them on. The letterbox is listed as an optional feature, so you can toggle it whenever you like.

4. Find the lens distortion option and enable it too.

5. Apply the changes and return to your world.

Frame Your Shot

  • Hide the HUD. Use the vanilla toggle that hides the hotbar and crosshair so nothing sits inside the letterboxed frame.
  • Keep subjects near the center. The lens distortion is meant to curve the image slightly, so the edges of the frame bend the most. Builds placed in the middle stay the most natural-looking.
  • Use light sources. Torches, lava and glowstone pick up the pack's soft bloom glow. This works well with the sepia grade for moody night scenes.

When you finish recording, go back into the pack's settings and turn the letterbox off. The bars reduce your usable view, which is awkward for everyday building or combat.
