Optifine Old Lighting Shaders FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I turn on Optifine Old Lighting Shaders?
Open Options, then Video Settings, then Shaders, and pick Optifine Old Lighting Shaders from the list. If it isn't listed, click the Shaders Folder button, make sure the pack is inside that folder, then reopen the menu.
What does this shader actually change?
It recreates the classic lighting look from OptiFine's old internal shader options, bringing back the familiar light shades of older setups. Textures, blocks and the overall vanilla art style stay the same.
Will this shader lag my potato PC or old laptop?
It's built to run smoothly on low-end PCs and laptops and to keep frame rates stable during normal play and around big builds. If you still get stutters, lower other OptiFine video settings such as render distance.
Does it make Minecraft look realistic like other shader packs?
No. It aims for simple retro visuals that keep the vanilla feel, not realistic or heavy effects. If you want dramatic reflections or volumetric lighting, this isn't that kind of pack.
Does it work in the Nether and the End?
Yes. It preserves the original vanilla look across all dimensions, so the Overworld, Nether and End all keep their normal style with the old-style lighting.
Why does my world look exactly the same after enabling it?
Check that the shader is actually selected in the Shaders menu and not set to OFF or Internal. Also keep in mind that the changes are deliberately subtle and retro, so compare against shaders off to see the difference in light shading.
Why can't I find a Shaders button in my video settings?
The Shaders menu only appears when OptiFine is running. Make sure you launched the game with the OptiFine profile, not the plain vanilla one.
Can I use it with Iris instead of OptiFine?
The pack is made to recreate OptiFine's old lighting, so OptiFine is the intended way to run it. It might load on other shader loaders, but the look and behavior aren't guaranteed to match.
Can I use a resource pack together with this shader?
Yes. The shader only changes lighting, so resource packs still control block and item textures. A vanilla-style resource pack keeps the classic retro look most consistent.
Do my friends or the server need the shader too?
No. Shaders run only on your own client, so you can use it on any server or LAN world without anyone else installing it. Other players will only see it if they enable it themselves.
