Setting Up a Hardcore Horror Challenge Run with Nightmare Fuel
Nightmare Fuel is built as a visual test for hardcore survival players. Pairing it with Hardcore mode turns ordinary exploration into a stressful horror run. Here is how to set one up so it stays fun.
Creating the run
1. Enable Nightmare Fuel first (Video Settings → Shader Packs) and confirm it works in a test world.
2. Create a new world and set the game mode to Hardcore. You get one life, and the difficulty is locked to Hard.
3. For extra tension, leave Allow Cheats off so you can't rescue yourself with commands.
4. Decide your goal before you start: survive a set number of nights, reach a specific biome, or beat the game.
Rules that suit this pack
- No turning shaders off during danger. Only disable the pack while you're safe inside your base, if you choose to allow it at all.
- Base before nightfall. Unpredictable lighting makes the first night far deadlier than normal.
- Torch everything. Light your base heavily, since dark corners become hard to read.
Staying comfortable
The screen distortions are intentionally disorienting, and long sessions can be tiring.
- Play in shorter sessions and take breaks.
- If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, pause and switch the shader off. Some packs also have their own settings in the Shader Packs screen that you can check for gentler options.
- Test the pack in a throwaway world first, so your hardcore life isn't spent learning how the visuals behave.
