Turn On Kuwahara Shaders and Confirm the Painted Look Is Working

Kuwahara Shaders is a shader pack, so it runs through a shader loader such as Iris or OptiFine. It is not a resource pack and will not appear in the Resource Packs menu.

Load the pack

1. Make sure your shader loader is installed and that you are launching the game with it.

2. From the main menu or the pause menu, open Options > Video Settings.

3. Open the shader menu. Iris calls it Shader Packs and OptiFine calls it Shaders....

4. If Kuwahara Shaders is not listed, click the button that opens the shader pack folder. This is the shaderpacks folder inside your Minecraft directory. Place the pack file there, then return to the menu.

5. Select Kuwahara Shaders and click Apply or Done. The screen may pause briefly while the shader compiles.

Check that it's active

Load into a world and look for these signs:

  • Softer textures: Grass, stone, and wood should look smoothed and oily, like brush strokes, instead of showing crisp individual pixels. Blocks should still be easy to recognize.
  • Smoothed edges everywhere: Harsh pixel edges on landscapes, the sky, and mobs should look softened.
  • Gentle glow: Torches, glowstone, and other bright blocks should give off a soft, warm bloom.

If the world still looks like plain vanilla, go back to the shader menu. Confirm that Kuwahara Shaders is highlighted as the active pack, not "Off" or "Internal."
