Kuwahara Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on Kuwahara Shaders?
Open the shader pack list in your shader loader (usually Video Settings > Shader Packs), select Kuwahara Shaders, and click Apply or Done. Then load into a world. The change is easiest to spot on landscapes with lots of detail.
How do I know the shader is actually working?
Look closely at block textures and the edges between blocks. Instead of sharp, crisp pixels you should see smooth, oily brushstroke-like patches, while blocks still keep their blocky shape. Bright blocks and light sources should also have a soft glow around them.
I selected the shader but the game looks exactly the same, what did I do wrong?
The most common causes are forgetting to click Apply/Done or having the shader pack list set back to off. It can also happen if the shader loader isn't active in your current game setup. Reopen the Shader Packs menu, confirm Kuwahara Shaders is highlighted as the active pack, and check again in-world.
Will the painting filter make blocks and items hard to recognize?
No. The filter softens harsh pixel edges but deliberately keeps the core vanilla feel, so blocks, items and mobs stay easy to identify. You get a cartoon or painted look without losing track of what you're looking at.
Will Kuwahara Shaders lag my low-end PC?
It's designed to run smoothly on low-end hardware without heavy lag, and it's lighter than heavy realistic shader packs. If you still get stutters, lower your render distance and other vanilla video settings first, since those usually cost more than the filter itself.
Why can't I see the bloom glow?
The bloom is intentionally subtle and only shows on bright blocks and light sources, so it's hard to notice in full daylight. Try it at night or in a dark cave near torches, lava or other glowing blocks. There you'll see the soft, warm halo much more clearly.
Does the oil paint effect apply to mobs and the sky too, or just blocks?
It applies across the whole scene. That includes landscapes, the sky and mobs, so everything on screen gets the same softened, painted style.
Is this a realistic shader like the big lighting packs?
No. It's a stylized shader built around the oil paint filter and a gentle bloom, aiming for a clean, artistic cartoon look rather than realism. Pick it if you want the world to look like a painting, not a photo.
Does Kuwahara Shaders need to be on the server for multiplayer?
No. It's a purely visual effect that runs on your own client, so you can use it on any server. Other players will only see the painted look if they turn it on themselves.
How do I get the best painting-style screenshots with it?
Press F1 to hide the HUD. Frame wide landscapes or scenes with detailed textures, where the brushstroke effect stands out most. For a more dramatic shot, try dusk or night near light sources so the bloom adds a warm glow to the picture.
