Show Off Colored Lighting While Keeping the Vanilla Look

The main appeal of Forbis's ! Shaders is colored lighting that does not replace the classic vanilla style. Here is how to see it at its best.

Build a quick lighting test room

1. Build a small enclosed room, or dig one underground, so no sunlight gets in.

2. If fullbright is on in the pack's settings, turn it off. Otherwise the darkness that makes colored light stand out disappears.

3. Place a row of different light sources a few blocks apart. Good choices include:

  • Torches
  • Soul torches
  • Lanterns
  • Redstone torches
  • Glowstone
  • A small pool of lava

4. Walk along the row and compare how each one tints the surrounding blocks.

This tells you which light sources give the mood you want for each part of your base. Use warm-looking light in living areas, for example, and something cooler in storage rooms.

Taking clean screenshots

  • Press F1 to hide the HUD so only the scene and lighting show.
  • The pack applies a subtle vignette that darkens the screen edges. This draws the eye toward the center, so frame your subject in the middle.
  • If you prefer no darkened edges, open the pack's settings and look for a vignette option. If there isn't one, the vignette is part of the pack's default look.

The pack keeps the vanilla look, so it pairs well with the default textures or with vanilla-style resource packs.
