Understand the 256-Color Palette Limitation

What the Color Limit Does

Chippa256 Shaders restricts your game to only 256 colors—the same constraint old computer graphics faced. This means colors you see in vanilla Minecraft get remapped to the closest available color in the retro palette.

Visual Impact

Gradients become banded, smooth color transitions appear stepped, and some blocks may look slightly different than you expect. Bright colors become more muted; subtle shading disappears. This is intentional and creates the authentic retro aesthetic.

Blocks Most Affected

Blocks with complex textures or many color variations—like grass, leaves, and water—show the most noticeable changes. Simple solid-color blocks like stone or dirt remain relatively recognizable.

Toggling the Effect

If you want to disable the color palette restriction while keeping pixelation, check your shader options for a separate palette toggle. Not all configurations offer this, so your mileage may vary.
