Playing Normally While Everything Looks Like ASCII Text
With Ascii Craft Shaders active, every block, mob and item is drawn as ASCII text characters. It looks great, but reading the world takes some adjustment. These tips help you actually play instead of just staring at the screen.
Reading the world
- Use F3: The debug screen still shows your coordinates and the block you are looking at, even when the textures are text. This is the most reliable way to identify blocks.
- Watch the shapes: Mobs keep their usual outline and movement, so learn to recognize threats by their size and how they move. Do not rely on their surface details.
- Check your inventory: Item tooltips still show names when you hover over them. Use this to confirm what you are holding.
- Listen: Sounds are unchanged. Hissing, footsteps and groans warn you of mobs before you can read their characters.
Switching off quickly for hard tasks
Some jobs are harder in terminal mode, such as finding ores, sorting chests, or fighting in a dark cave. For these:
1. Pause the game and open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.
2. Turn shaders off and finish the task.
3. Re-enable Ascii Craft Shaders afterward.
If you use Iris, check Options → Controls for its toggle-shaders key. You can bind it to swap between the normal view and the terminal view without opening menus.
