How to Turn On Ascii Craft Shaders and See the Terminal Look

Ascii Craft Shaders is a shader pack, so it only works through a shader loader such as Iris or OptiFine. Once it is active, blocks, mobs and items are drawn as ASCII text characters, which makes the game look like an old command-line terminal.

Activating the pack

1. Launch Minecraft with your shader loader (Iris or OptiFine).

2. From the title screen or the pause menu, open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.

3. If the pack is not listed, click the button that opens the shader pack folder. Put the Ascii Craft Shaders file in the shaderpacks folder, not the resourcepacks folder.

4. Return to the Shader Packs screen. The pack should now appear in the list.

5. Select Ascii Craft Shaders and click Apply or Done.

Checking that it worked

  • Load a world. The terrain, your hotbar items and any nearby mobs should all appear as text symbols instead of normal textures.
  • If the world looks completely normal, open the Shader Packs screen again. Confirm the pack is highlighted as active and that shaders are not set to off.
  • If the pack shows an error or the screen goes black, try switching to another shader pack and then back. This makes the loader recompile it.

To leave terminal mode, go back to the Shader Packs screen and choose the off or no-shader option. Your world will return to its regular textures.
