What the Number Means

TPS stands for Ticks Per Second. A healthy Minecraft server runs at its full target rate, meaning the game world updates as fast as it is supposed to. When the number drops below that target, the server is falling behind — mobs move sluggishly, block breaking feels delayed, and redstone can misbehave. The TPS HUD Mod reads this value from the server's own timing data, so what you see reflects the actual server, not just your client's frame rate.

Distinguishing Server Lag from Client Lag

This is the key skill. If your FPS is low but the TPS readout stays at a healthy value, the problem is on your end — your graphics settings, your PC, or your connection. If the TPS number is dropping while your FPS looks fine, the server itself is struggling, and nothing you change in your video settings will fix it. Watch the readout during busy moments: large mob farms running, many players online, or heavy redstone contraptions are common causes of a dip.
