How to Drink Water and Manage Thirst with Canteens

Filling a Canteen

Craft a canteen from a tier material, then fill it at a water source. The Empty Leather Canteen, Empty Copper Canteen, Empty Iron Canteen, Empty Gold Canteen, Empty Diamond Canteen, and Empty Netherite Canteen all hold water once filled. Filling produces the matching Dirty Water Canteen for that tier, such as a Leather Dirty Water Canteen or Iron Dirty Water Canteen.

Drinking straight from a Dirty Water Canteen restores thirst but carries risk. To drink safely, purify the water first.

Purifying Water

Build a Water Purifier. Place a Dirty Water Canteen or Dirty Water Bottle into it to process the contents. The purifier converts Dirty Water into Purified Water: a Leather Dirty Water Canteen becomes a Leather Purified Water Canteen, an Iron Dirty Water Canteen becomes an Iron Purified Water Canteen, and so on up through Copper, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. A Dirty Water Bottle becomes a Purified Water Bottle.

Drink from a Purified Water Canteen or Purified Water Bottle to restore thirst without the dirty-water penalty. Higher-tier canteens hold more charges, so upgrade from Leather to Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and finally Netherite as materials allow. Carry a filled Purified Water Canteen whenever you travel so you can drink on demand.
