Overview
GPU Tape Mod is a client-side rendering mod that targets higher frame rates and reduced video memory usage. It works by applying direct-state access (DSA) to manage buffers without binding them, cutting down the number of rendering operations. It also pools VBO and EBO buffers so they are reused instead of recreated, which saves memory over time. Faster math formulas speed up CPU-side computations on the client, and depth buffers are adjusted to squeeze out additional frames.
Compatibility and Requirements
GPU Tape Mod can run alongside popular rendering mods such as
Sodium,
Embeddium, and Iris. Some of its features depend on a graphics card that supports OpenGL 4.5 or higher, so older hardware may not benefit from everything it offers. One advertised feature, the Renderbuffer Object (RBO) depth path that replaces textures for depth calculations, does not work. The rest of the mod's optimizations remain the reason to use it.
