Navigate with the Compass and Clock HUD and Explorer Map Distances

Dynamic Surroundings Rebirth turns the compass and clock into on-screen readouts. You no longer have to squint at the item icon to read them.

Show the Compass or Clock on Your HUD

1. Craft or pick up a vanilla compass or clock.

2. Put it in your main hand or your off-hand.

3. While you hold it, its information appears directly on your HUD.

4. To keep the readout visible while you mine or fight, move the compass or clock to your off-hand. Swap it there with the vanilla swap-hands key (F by default).

This is handy for long trips. You can watch your heading or the time of day while you keep a weapon or tool in your main hand. With a clock, you'll know when night is coming and can head home before mobs spawn.

Read the Distance on Explorer Maps

Explorer maps from cartographer villagers point you to structures. The mod adds the exact horizontal distance to the target location.

1. Hold the explorer map so you can see it.

2. Read the displayed horizontal distance to the marked location.

3. Walk or ride toward the target and check the number as it drops.

The distance is horizontal only, so it doesn't count height. When the number gets close to zero, you're standing above or below the target. You may still need to dig down, climb, or dive to actually reach the structure.
