How to Sort a Chest or Inventory with Middle Click

The Basic Sort Action

Sorting with this mod is a single input: press your middle mouse button while hovering over the container you want to organize. The mod sends the request to the server, the server rearranges the slots, and the result is sent back to you. Because the server does the actual work, the sort is fast and consistent even on laggy connections.

Step by Step

1. Open the container you want to sort (a chest, your player inventory, a hopper, a barrel, or any other supported container).

2. Hover your cursor anywhere over the container's slot grid.

3. Press the middle mouse button once.

4. Watch the items rearrange. They are grouped by their item registry name, so all stacks of the same item end up next to each other.

5. Within each group, the ordering goes from the highest count to the least count, so your fullest stacks appear first.

Things to Know

  • The sort respects slots that are marked as extract-only or that reject certain items (canExtract / isItemValid). Those slots are skipped rather than being overwritten, so you will not lose items in specialized containers.
  • If nothing appears to happen, the mod is likely only installed on one side. It needs to be present on both the client and the server to function.
  • Middle-click is also the default "pick block" key in vanilla, so if you have rebound pick block, make sure the middle mouse button is still free for sorting.
