How to Keep a Sign's Text When You Break and Move It

Signs Retain Their Text

Breaking a sign no longer wipes it. The mod stores the sign's text, its dye color, and whether it was glowing, so you can pick it up and place it somewhere else with everything intact.

1. Break the sign you want to move. It drops as an item that still remembers its contents.

2. Carry it to the new location.

3. Place it. The text, color, and glow are restored automatically.

This is great for relocating shop signs, waypoint markers, or decorative labels without rewriting them.

Starting Fresh

If you want to reuse a retained sign for a brand-new message, you need to clear it first:

  • Drop the sign into a crafting grid and take it back out. This resets the stored text, color, and glow.
  • The sign is now blank and ready to write on.

Placing Signs Without the Editor Popping Up

By default, placing a sign opens the text editor immediately. The mod can stop that, so you can place signs first and edit them later. This is controlled in config/improvedsigns.json5.

Combined with retain and copy, this makes bulk sign work much faster: place a row of signs, then fill them in one at a time, or copy one finished sign onto the rest.
