How to Access a Chest Behind a Sign Without Breaking the Sign
The Passthrough Trick
Normally a sign placed on a chest blocks you from opening it. With this mod, you can keep the sign as a label and still use the container underneath.
1. Place your chest, barrel, shulker box, or other container as usual.
2. Attach a sign to it and write whatever label you want.
3. Walk up and right-click the sign (not the chest). The container's inventory opens instead of the sign editor.
This works because the mod passes your interaction through the sign to the block behind it. You do not need to sneak, and you do not need to remove the sign.
Things to Know
- Sneaking changes the behavior. If you sneak and right-click, you get the normal sign interaction instead of passthrough, which is handy when you actually want to edit the text.
- If passthrough seems disabled, check
config/improvedsigns.json5— every feature in this mod can be toggled on or off there. - This is ideal for storage rooms where you want a clean labeled wall of chests without signs floating awkwardly to the side.
If right-clicking opens the sign editor instead, you are likely sneaking by accident, or the passthrough option has been turned off in the config.
