How to Use the Larger Ruined Portals as a Navigation Network
What Makes Them Useful
The mod replaces some standard ruined portals with larger versions. A bigger frame means more obsidian per structure, and more importantly, a more visible landmark from a distance. That makes them excellent waypoints in the Nether, where the terrain is otherwise repetitive.
Turning Portals into Waypoints
- When you find a large portal, repair the frame with obsidian you have mined from other ruined portals, then light it. A working portal gives you a fast route between the Nether and a linked Overworld location.
- Record the coordinates of every portal you repair. Since Nether travel is compressed relative to the Overworld, a chain of lit portals lets you cross large distances quickly.
- Harvest the leftover obsidian from frames you do not intend to use. Large portals yield more of it, which saves you from mining obsidian at a lava lake.
- Build a small shelter beside each portal with a bed, a chest, and a crafting table so the network is actually usable on long trips.
Avoid breaking the crying obsidian unless you specifically need it — it is a useful visual marker for spotting the structure again through fog or from a distance.
