How to Navigate Back Out of a Hopo Better Mineshaft
Themed rooms and branching corridors make Hopo Better Mineshaft easy to get lost in. Getting out reliably is a skill worth practising before you go deep.
Use a one-sided torch rule
Place torches only on the right-hand wall as you explore. On the way back, follow torches on your left. This single rule resolves almost every junction without needing to remember the layout.
Mark junctions, not corridors
At every fork, place a distinctive block or a torch on a raised block so junctions stand out from ordinary tunnel walls. If you take the wrong branch, you will know immediately when the markers stop appearing.
Do not rely on the ceiling
Mineshaft ceilings are often broken by cave openings and room transitions, so following the roof is unreliable. Follow your own markers instead.
Build a fallback route
If you are descending far, dig a small staircase straight up at a point you can find again, or leave a trail of cheap blocks along the main corridor. A vertical shaft with a water column or ladder gives you a guaranteed exit that ignores the maze entirely.
When lost, stop and think
Do not keep walking. Return to the last junction marker you remember, then re-read the torch sides. Panic-walking deeper is how a short trip becomes a lost inventory.
