How to Use Herd Panic to Your Advantage When Hunting

Herding Mobs Into Traps

The panic mechanic is not just an obstacle. When you hit one mob, the whole herd runs in a direction away from you. You can steer that direction by choosing where you stand. Position yourself so the animals flee toward a cliff, a fenced killing chamber, or a water stream that carries them to a collection point.

Step-by-Step Herding Technique

1. Build a funnel: two walls of blocks forming a V-shape that narrows into a pen or drop.

2. Stand on the open side of the funnel, opposite the pen.

3. Hit the nearest animal once. The herd will panic and run away from you, which means into the funnel.

4. Follow slowly, hitting another animal if the group stops or turns.

5. Close the gate behind them once they are inside.

This works especially well with cows and sheep, which move in loose groups. For pigs, the same idea applies but they may scatter more. Combine this with a lead on one animal to anchor the group if needed. The key is patience: do not sprint into the herd, or they will split around you instead of running in a straight line.
