If you want to keep the original sherd but recover some of the crafting cost, smelting is your answer. Place a gilded sherd in a furnace and let it cook like any other item.

What You'll Get

Once smelting completes, you'll receive the ungilded decorated sherd back. The gold is removed and lost in this process—you won't recover the gold nugget itself, but you preserve the artifact underneath.

When to Use This Method

This approach is ideal when you've changed your mind about gilding a particular sherd, or when you need the original sherd for a different purpose. It's a one-way process, so only smelt sherds you're certain you want to un-gild.
