For maximum gold recovery, use a blast furnace instead of a regular furnace. Place your gilded sherd inside and let it process.

The Trade-Off

Unlike regular smelting, blast furnace processing destroys the sherd entirely. You'll recover the gold nugget, but the decorated pottery is lost. This is the only way to reclaim the gold investment.
