Setting Up an Efficient Recycling Station
Plan the Layout
A dedicated recycling station keeps your scavenged metal from piling up in random chests. Pick a spot near your main storage and your fuel supply.
Build It
1. Place one or more furnaces in a row — multiple furnaces let you smelt several item types at once.
2. Put a chest on the input side and fill it with items to recycle: rails, minecarts, bells, tripwire hooks, old tools and armor.
3. Put a second chest on the output side for the recovered ingots and nuggets.
4. Keep a fuel chest (coal, charcoal, or planks) within easy reach.
5. If you use hoppers, feed items into the top of each furnace and pull output from the bottom into your collection chest.
Sort Before You Smelt
Separate your scrap by metal so you know what you're getting. Iron scrap (rails, minecarts, hooks) goes to one furnace; gold scrap (bells, gold gear) goes to another. This makes it obvious at a glance which output chest holds which metal.
Keep It Flowing
- Refill the input chest whenever you return from exploring.
- Empty the output chest into your main ingot storage regularly.
- Remember recovery is partial — treat this as a supplement to mining, not a replacement.
Why Bother
A steady recycling station turns junk you'd otherwise discard into a slow but reliable trickle of iron and gold, which is especially handy early on or when you're saving your good tools.
