Explore Caves Efficiently Without Running Out of Light
Understand Torch Behavior in New Areas
When you explore uncharted territory, normal torches automatically convert to flimsy torches that gradually burn out. You have a small chance to find a lucky permanent torch when new chunks load, but don't rely on this.
Bring Extra Torches and Fuel
Carry more torches than you think you'll need, since they fade through four visible stages before dying. Pack extra coal or materials to craft new torches on the go. Consider bringing lanterns to place torches inside—they burn significantly longer underground.
Mark Your Path Strategically
Place torches only at key decision points and intersections rather than continuously along your route. This conserves torches while still marking your path back. Use the fading light stages as a timer—when torches dim noticeably, it's time to head back or resupply.
Recycle Burnt-Out Torches
Collect completely burnt-out torches you find and craft the scraps together to recover coal. This lets you recycle failed light sources into new torches, extending your exploration range.
