Troubleshoot a Trap That Isn't Catching Fish

Check Your Biome

The most common issue: your trap is in the wrong location. Fish traps only work in natural water biomes like oceans, rivers, and lakes. If you placed it in a man-made pool or small channel you dug yourself, it won't catch anything. Move the trap to a naturally generated water body.

Verify Submersion and Bait

1. Ensure the trap is fully underwater—even partial exposure stops it from working

2. Open the trap menu and confirm it contains bait (bread or crops)

3. If the bait slot is empty, add bread or another crop

Fish traps work passively over time. If you just placed it, give it time to catch fish. Check back after a few minutes of gameplay.

Last Resort

If the trap still doesn't work after checking biome, submersion, and bait, try breaking it and placing a new one nearby. Sometimes redeploying fixes hidden issues.
