How to Update Fabric API Without Breaking Your Existing Mods

Back Up Before You Touch Anything

Before replacing Fabric API, copy your entire mods folder and your world saves to a safe location. Updating a shared library can expose incompatibilities in mods that were built against an older build. Having a backup lets you roll back instantly if something goes wrong.

Matching Versions Carefully

Fabric API builds are tied to specific Minecraft versions. When you update Minecraft, you must also update Fabric API to a build made for that version. When you only update Fabric API but keep the same Minecraft version, choose a build that is the same or newer than the one you had, but still for your current game version. Do not mix builds across game versions. Remove the old jar completely before adding the new one so only a single copy remains.

Verifying After the Update

Launch the game and open the mod list to confirm the new Fabric API version is active. Then load a test world and exercise the mods that depend on it, such as opening their menus or triggering their features. If a mod misbehaves, check whether that mod has a newer build available. If problems persist, restore your backup and stay on the previous Fabric API build until the dependent mod catches up.
