How to Install Fabric API So Your Mods Actually Load

Understanding What Fabric API Does

Fabric API is not a gameplay mod on its own. It is a shared library that other Fabric mods depend on for common features like networking, rendering hooks, and registry helpers. If you launch the game with a mod that requires Fabric API but the library is missing, the game will usually crash on startup or the mod will silently fail to load. Installing it correctly is the first step before adding any other Fabric mods.

Placing the File Correctly

Download the Fabric API jar that matches your Minecraft version and loader. Open your Minecraft installation folder and locate the mods directory. If it does not exist, create it. Drop the Fabric API jar directly into mods alongside your other mods. Do not unzip it and do not place it in the config folder. Launch the game using your Fabric profile. If the game reaches the title screen without a missing-dependency error, Fabric API is loaded. You can confirm by checking the mod list on the title screen or in the in-game mod menu, where Fabric API should appear as an entry.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Make sure the Fabric API version matches your Minecraft version. A jar built for a different game version will either be ignored or crash the loader. Also keep only one Fabric API jar in the folder; duplicate copies can cause conflicts. When you update Minecraft, replace the Fabric API jar with one built for the new version before launching.
