How to Grow Cactus, Sugarcane, and Vines with Bone Meal

Why These Plants Are Special

In vanilla Minecraft, Bone Meal does nothing for cactus, sugarcane, or vines. Extended Bone Meal changes that, letting you fertilize them to speed up their growth. This makes it possible to build compact farms for these normally slow-spreading plants.

Growing Each Plant

Cactus: Place a cactus on sand as usual. Use Bone Meal on the cactus block and it will grow taller. You can stack this to reach the height you want, then harvest the top blocks.

Sugarcane: Plant sugarcane next to water on sand or dirt. Use Bone Meal on the sugarcane and it will add height. Repeat until it reaches your desired height, then break the upper blocks for drops.

Vines: Attach a vine to a wall or ceiling. Use Bone Meal on the vine and it will extend downward or outward, letting you cover a surface quickly without waiting.

Farm Layout Tips

  • For cactus and sugarcane, leave one block of space above so the plant has room to grow.
  • Build a wall of vines by placing one vine and repeatedly fertilizing it; it will spread across the surface.
  • Combine these with a Bone Meal source (a skeleton farm or composter setup) so you never run out.

With these three plants covered, you can produce cactus green, sugar, and vine drops on demand.
