How to Make Burning Mobs Show Colored Flames

Understanding How Flames Get Their Color

Dyed Flames is purely visual and client-side, so you don't need to install anything on a server for it to work. The mod watches which fire source is burning a mob and tints the flame and smoke particles to match. That means the color you see is determined entirely by the block or fluid the mob is standing in, not by the mob itself.

Steps to See Colored Flames

1. Place a fire source that has a defined color — vanilla soul fire is the easiest one to test with, since it already has a distinct look.

2. Lure or push a mob into that fire so it catches alight.

3. Watch the particles: the flames and the smoke trail should now match the source's color instead of the default orange.

4. Try a few different fire sources side by side to compare — the difference is most obvious when two mobs are burning at once from different sources.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • If a mob is burning but the flames look default orange, the fire source it is standing in probably has no color defined yet.
  • Because the change is client-side, other players only see the same colors if they also have the mod installed.
  • No gameplay values change — burning still deals the same damage and lasts the same duration.
