How to Change Distant Horizons Behavior From an External System
What "External Interaction" Means in Practice
The Distant Horizons API Mod lets code outside Distant Horizons influence how distant terrain is generated and displayed. This is useful when you want a script, a companion mod, or a config-driven system to toggle or adjust Distant Horizons without editing Distant Horizons itself.
Doing It Safely
1. Identify the behavior you want to change — for example, whether distant terrain renders, or how much of it is shown.
2. Find the corresponding API method that exposes that behavior. The API is intentionally narrow, so only supported behaviors can be altered; anything not exposed is not meant to be changed externally.
3. Apply your change at a safe point in the game lifecycle. Changes made mid-render or mid-chunk-generation can cause visual glitches or crashes, so prefer init, config load, or explicit player-triggered events.
4. Revert or re-apply your change when the triggering condition ends, so you do not leave Distant Horizons in an unexpected state.
Testing Your Change
Verify by observing distant terrain in-game with a large view distance. Toggle your change on and off and confirm the distant terrain responds as expected. If nothing happens, check that Distant Horizons is actually installed and enabled — the API cannot alter a mod that is not running.
