How to Get Close to a Distant Friend Without It Vanishing

Understanding the Despawn Trigger

Distant Friends vanish the moment you cross into their personal space. The trigger is proximity-based, not line-of-sight based, so staring at one through a spyglass from a hill will not scare it off. The mob only teleports away once your hitbox enters its detection radius.

Approaches That Actually Work

  • Crouch-walk the final stretch. Sneaking reduces your movement noise and keeps your profile low, which buys you a few extra blocks before the despawn check fires.
  • Use terrain as a buffer. Approach from behind a hill, tree line, or wall so you close distance in short bursts rather than one long straight walk.
  • Break line of sight, then reposition. If it starts its sneak animation, back off, circle around, and try a different angle.
  • Watch for the punch animation. Air-punching usually precedes a vanish, so treat it as your cue to freeze.

What You Cannot Do

You cannot trap one in a hole, fence it in, or block its escape route. The disappearance is not pathfinding-based, so walls and water do not stop it. Any guide claiming you can pen one in is wrong. Treat every encounter as a timed observation, not a capture attempt.
