How to Start Leveling Your Combat Skill Tree

The combat tree only advances when you actually kill hostile mobs, so the fastest way to get moving is to pick a reliable spawn source and farm it deliberately.

Getting Your First Points

Build a simple dark room or use an existing mob spawner, then kill everything that spawns with a sword or axe. Each kill grants combat experience, and once you cross the threshold for a level you receive skill points to spend. Open the skills screen (bound through Pufferfish's Skills) and look at the combat tree to see which nodes are unlocked and which need points.

Spending Points Wisely

Early nodes in a combat tree typically boost melee damage, attack speed, or survivability, while deeper nodes unlock stronger bonuses. Read each node's tooltip before committing, because some paths gate later nodes behind them. If you are unsure, put your first points into a general damage or health node so every future fight is easier.

Keeping the Grind Efficient

Fight mobs you can kill quickly rather than tanky ones, since experience is usually tied to the kill rather than the mob's health. A farm with many weak mobs will outpace hunting single strong enemies. Bring food and decent armor so you never have to retreat mid-farm, and re-check the tree after every few levels to spend points instead of letting them sit unused.
