Fixing a Skill Tree That Won't Give Experience

If kills or mining are not advancing your tree, the cause is almost always one of a few simple things.

Check the Required Dependency

This mod depends on Pufferfish's Skills and Attributes. If either is missing or mismatched, the trees may load without functioning. Confirm both are present and that the skills system itself is active in your world.

Confirm the Action Counts

Combat experience comes from killing mobs, and mining experience comes from breaking stone and ores. Breaking dirt, wood, or other blocks will not advance the mining tree, and passive or already-dead entities will not advance combat. Make sure you are performing the exact action the tree expects.

Verify Points and Levels

Experience and points are separate. You may be gaining experience but not yet at the level that grants a point, so check your current level and progress bar in the skills screen. If points are available but the tree looks locked, a prerequisite node may be unfilled.

Last Resorts

If nothing works, test in a fresh world with only the required mods enabled to rule out conflicts, and check that the tree is actually assigned to your player. Reassigning or reloading the skill tree through the skills interface often restores normal behavior.
