How to Use the Distance Readout to Navigate Back to Your Death Point
What the Distance Tells You
The death message includes your current distance from the death point. This number updates as you move, so it acts like a rough compass. If the number is going down, you are heading the right way. If it is going up, turn around.
Combine It With Coordinates
Distance alone does not tell you direction, so pair it with the coordinates. Use F3 to see your X, Y, and Z, then compare to the death coordinates. Move along one axis at a time to figure out which direction reduces the distance fastest.
Handle Different Dimensions
If the death message says you died in a different dimension than the one you are in, the distance readout will not be meaningful until you travel to that dimension. Build or find a portal first, then check the distance again once you arrive.
Practical Tips
Mark your death point with a waypoint or a torch once you arrive so you can find it again. If you are on a server with click-to-teleport enabled, use that instead of walking, but remember it only works for your most recent death and only for a limited time after dying.
