How to Find Your Items After Dying

Read the Death Screen

When you die, the death screen now shows the exact position where you died, not just the generic death message. Look for the coordinates displayed on the screen before you respawn. Write them down or take a screenshot if you need to, because once you respawn you will not see that screen again.

Use the Death Message

After respawning, open your chat log. The death message in chat also contains the coordinates, the dimension you died in, and your current distance from the death point. This is useful because it updates your distance as you travel, so you can tell whether you are getting closer or further away.

Travel to the Coordinates

Press F3 to open the debug screen and compare your current position to the death coordinates. If you died in a different dimension, you will need to build or find a portal first. The dimension is listed in the death message so you know which one to head to.

If You Are a Server Operator

Operators can click the coordinates directly in the death message to teleport straight to the death point. If this feature has been enabled for all players on the server, you can also click to teleport, but only within a short window after dying and only to your most recent death.
