Using the 3D Moon to Navigate at Night

Read the Moon Phase

Because the moon renders as a cube with distinct lit faces, you can judge direction and time from it more easily than a flat sprite. Watch which face is illuminated as the night progresses — the lit portion sweeps across the cube the same way the real moon's phase changes. A fully lit face means a bright, well-illuminated night; a thin sliver means a dark one.

Plan Travel Around Brightness

Use the moon's phase to decide when to travel:

  • On a full or near-full moon, the sky is bright enough to spot terrain, mobs, and cave mouths without torches.
  • On a new or crescent moon, bring light sources and expect poor visibility.
  • The moon rises in the east and sets in the west, so its position tells you which way you are facing if you are lost.

Combine With the Sun

During the day, the cubic sun's position gives you the same east-to-west bearing. Track it across the sky to keep a straight heading while exploring. Because both bodies are now solid 3D objects, their angle above the horizon is easier to read than a flat disc, letting you estimate how much daylight or night remains before you commit to a long journey or a risky descent.
