Why a Mod's Config Screen Looks Different or Is Missing

If a mod that should have settings shows no config button, or the screen looks broken, the cause is almost always a mismatch between the mod and Cloth Config, not a bug in Cloth Config itself.

Common causes

  • Cloth Config is not installed. Mods that depend on it will either fail to load or hide their config button. Check your mods folder for the Cloth Config file.
  • Version mismatch. A mod built against one major version of Cloth Config may not render correctly against another. Make sure the Cloth Config version matches what the mod expects.
  • Wrong loader. Cloth Config ships separate builds for different mod loaders. A build for the wrong loader won't be recognized.
  • The mod uses a different config library. Not every mod with a settings screen uses Cloth Config; some use their own or another library, so the screen will look different on purpose.
  • The mod has no config screen at all. Some mods only read a config file and never open a GUI.

What to check

Open your mod list and confirm Cloth Config is present and enabled. If the screen opens but elements overlap or text is cut off, that's usually a GUI scale or resource pack issue; try adjusting Options > Video Settings > GUI Scale. If a specific mod's screen is blank, that mod likely needs a newer or older Cloth Config build.
