Fixing a Cloth Config Screen That Won't Save or Crashes

A config screen that refuses to save, resets on restart, or crashes the game usually points to a bad value, a corrupted file, or a version conflict.

If changes don't stick

  • Make sure you pressed the screen's Save button and not just closed it with Escape.
  • Check that the config file isn't read-only. On some systems, files copied from a zip can keep restrictive permissions.
  • Confirm the game actually closed cleanly last time; a crash on exit can prevent the file from being written.
  • If only one option resets, that option may be controlled elsewhere, such as a server-side config or a command.

If the screen crashes

1. Note which option you changed last; a crash right after editing usually means that value is invalid.

2. Delete or rename the mod's config file so the mod regenerates defaults on next launch.

3. Reopen the screen and change one option at a time to find the culprit.

4. If the crash happens the moment the screen opens, the mod and Cloth Config versions likely don't match; align them.

If the whole game crashes on startup

Remove the mod's config file and try again. If it still crashes, the problem is the mod or Cloth Config version, not your settings. Keep a backup of any config you care about before deleting it.
