Editing a Cloth Config Mod's Settings File by Hand

Cloth Config screens write to a config file, and you can edit that file directly when a mod has no in-game screen or when you want to copy settings between instances.

Locating the file

Config files live in your game's config folder, next to your mods folder. Cloth Config-based mods typically save as a .json or .json5 file named after the mod. Some mods use a subfolder instead of a single file.

Editing safely

1. Close the game first. Editing while the game is running means your changes get overwritten on exit.

2. Back up the file by copying it somewhere else before you touch it.

3. Open it in a plain text editor. You'll see keys and values matching the options in the screen.

4. Change only the values, not the key names or the file's structure. Keep commas and brackets exactly where they are.

5. Save, then launch the game and open the mod's config screen to confirm your changes loaded.

When to prefer the screen

Hand-editing is fine for simple toggles and numbers, but Cloth Config screens validate input for you. If a value has a limited range or a fixed set of choices, the screen will stop you from entering something invalid, while a hand-edited file may silently break the mod's config. When in doubt, use the screen.
