How to Use Freelook While Building and Mining

Keep Your Aim Steady

When you are placing blocks in a straight line or mining a tunnel, your character faces one direction. Hold the freelook key to glance sideways at your surroundings without turning your body, so your block placement or mining direction stays consistent.

Check Your Back While Mining

In a mineshaft or cave, hold freelook and swing your view behind you to watch for approaching mobs. Because your movement direction does not change, you can keep backing away or advancing while you check. Release the key to return your aim to the block you were working on.

Line Up Builds

While building a wall or bridge, use freelook to look at the far end of your project and confirm it is straight, then release and continue placing. This avoids the common problem of turning your character to look and accidentally shifting your build line.

Watch Your Step

On scaffolding, cliffs, or narrow paths, freelook lets you admire the view or spot a drop without walking off the edge. Keep moving in your original direction and only release the key once you are safely on solid ground. Practicing the hold-release rhythm makes these actions feel automatic.
