How to Navigate Large Underground Cave Systems Without Getting Lost
The expansive deep caves added by this mod are easy to get lost in because they are open and interconnected rather than tunnel-like. A little discipline keeps you oriented.
Establish a Route System
Pick one consistent marker block for your path and use it only for the way home. At every fork, place a marker on the side you came from. Light the route you intend to return along and leave side passages dimmer, so brightness itself tells you which way is out. If you have access to maps, update them as you explore; if not, write down coordinates at each major junction.
Move in Manageable Chunks
Do not sprint through unexplored caverns. Clear and light one chamber at a time, then move to the next. This keeps mob spawns behind you suppressed and makes it obvious when you have doubled back. When you drop into a lower level, look for a way back up before going further — a waterfall, a climbable wall, or a place to pillar. Never descend past your ability to return.
Use Rift Valleys as Landmarks
Because rift valleys are long and vertical, they cut through multiple cave layers. If you find one from below, you have found both a landmark and an escape route. Mark it prominently and treat it as an anchor point for mapping the surrounding cave system.
