How to Mine Safely Around Canyon Walls and Ledge Drops
Canyons and rift valleys create sheer walls and long drops that change how you should mine. The ore is often exposed on the walls, which is convenient, but the fall risk is real.
Mining on Vertical Faces
When you spot exposed ore on a canyon wall, do not tunnel straight toward it from the edge. Instead, approach from the side, leaving a block between you and the drop at all times. Mine in a staircase pattern down the wall rather than dropping vertically. If you must work directly above a long fall, place a water bucket at the bottom first or bridge out a small platform to stand on. Always keep one hand free to place a block if the ground disappears.
Managing Ledge Drops
Before stepping onto any ledge, look down. In these large open caverns, a two-block drop can become a fatal fall if it opens into a lower chamber. Test edges by crouching, and bridge rather than jump. When crossing a gap, build a full-width path, not a single-block bridge, so you cannot be knocked off by a mob.
Recovering From a Fall
If you survive a fall into a lower area, do not panic-climb. Find the gentlest slope, pillar up with blocks, or use water to swim back up a wall. Mark the spot so you can avoid repeating the mistake, and consider it a new route into that lower layer.
