How to Change the Chunk Tick Speed Rule for Faster or Slower Random Ticks

What the rule controls

The chunkTickSpeed rule adjusts how many random ticks each loaded chunk receives per tick. Random ticks drive things like crop growth, leaf decay, grass spread, and similar random block updates. Raising the value makes these processes happen faster; lowering it slows them down. This is a rule, so it is off by default and does not affect vanilla behavior until you change it.

Setting the value

Use the Carpet rule command to set chunkTickSpeed to your desired value. A value of one matches vanilla behavior. Increasing it speeds up random-tick-driven growth across every loaded chunk, which is useful for accelerating farms or testing growth mechanics quickly. Decreasing it slows everything down, which can help on servers where random ticks are a performance cost.

Things to watch out for

Because the rule applies globally to loaded chunks, raising it affects far more than the one farm you care about — leaf decay, fire spread, and ice/snow formation all scale with it. Test in a copy of your world or a creative test area before applying it to a survival world. If you only want to speed up one specific process, consider whether a more targeted approach fits better. Remember to reset the rule to its default when you are finished experimenting so your world behaves normally again.
